Charles Archer was born on 1st October 1875 at Peterborough in Northamptonshire, son of Henrietta Archer, formerly Jamblin, and her husband William Henry Archer, a piano tuner. Charles appears in both the 1881 and 1891 censuses living with his parents and siblings on Cromwell Road in the city. By 1891 Charles was working as an auctioneer's apprentice.

Some time between 1891 and 1901 the family left Peterborough and moved about 75 miles south to Friern Barnet in the expanding northern suburbs of London. The 1901 census finds them living at Parkhurst Road there, with Charles working as a clerk.

The following year, Charles married Minnie Moles (or Moules). For the first few years after their marriage they lived in the Bowes Park area of Wood Green. They had a daughter called Elsie May in 1903 and a son called Charles Leslie in 1907. The 1911 census finds Charles, Minnie and their children living at 58 Marlborough Road in Wood Green. Charles was working as a photographer by this time.

After the First World War the family lived at 13A Northbrook Road, just round the corner from Marlborough Road, where they lived from at least 1919 to 1928. Around 1929 the family moved about a mile to 19 Chimes Avenue in Southgate, where they were living in both 1930 and 1931. Charles's daughter married in 1929. Some time between 1931 and 1939 the family moved to 13 Ridgeway Avenue at East Barnet in Hertfordshire.

Minnie died at the Wellhouse Hospital in Barnet on 11th June 1939, aged 55.

When the Second World War broke out later that year, Charles and his son Charles Leslie were still at 13 Ridgeway Avenue, and Charles was still described as a photographer. After the war, Charles continued living with his son, and they spent some time living at a bungalow in Sunnybank Road, Potters Bar, before returning to Friern Barnet, where they lived at 28 Grangeview Road. When Charles's son married in 1950 his wife joined them living there.

Charles died in 1951. He was 75 years old.
