Catharine Strauter was born in March 1834 in Germany / Prussia. On January 5, 1855 she married Frederick William Rolf in Cleveland, Ohio. They were the parents of 10 children, seven of whom were living in 1900.

Catherine drowned in Lake Erie on July 21, 1900 at the age of 65. According to her son John, she had been acting strange and unlike herself for a few days. She left her house at 110 Greenwood Ave early that morning and said that she was going to the shore. At Gordon Park she took off her shawl and bonnet and walked into the lake. A boy thought she might be trying to drown herself and called a policeman, but by the time he arrived she was dead.
