Catherine Henris was born of French-German parentage about 1846 in the area formerly known as Hesse-Darmstadt, which came under the control of Napoleon and then, after his defeat, became part of the Confederation of German states in 1815. In 1848 there was a widespread popular revolt across continental Europe, and many citizens of the German states emigrated after its failure. Catherine's family immigrated to the U.S., sailing out of Le Havre in France and arriving in New York on 19 Nov. 1853. Her family was living in Detroit by 1860, when she was 14, and she married Christian Clos in 1864 when she was about 18 and he 29. They lived at 341 Orleans Street in Detroit, where they had seven children. Catherine died on 6 June 1877 at age 31.
