Facts and Events
[Snapp.FBK,fbc.FTW] Exactly where she was born is also unknown, although there is a strong possibility that she was born in Rowan Co., NC, records showing that her father Lorentz Schepp had migrated with his family to the Carolina frontier before 1750. Catharine Schnepp's name was Catharine Ann. At that point and time the family was still naming the children using the traditional German naming customs, where the first name is actually the Saint's name and the middle name is the "call" name, which the child would be known as. German families generally used the same Saints name for each male and female child born in the family and it was traditionally used for generations in each family. It is thought that the Schnepps used the Saints name of Anna for the female children, shown by earlier family records, and the known fact that one sister is identified in NC family records as Anna Margaret. Thus, Catharine was most likely named Anna Catharina Schnepp (Snapp). The Schnepps used the saints name of Johans for the males, unless the child was to be known as John, then the child was named Johannes, and no saints name proceeded it |
