SAMUEL SHAFFER-- Catherine Powell, daughter of Levi Powell, wasborn in Stark County, Ohio, June 5, 1841, and departed this life at herhome in Helmer, Indiana, March 25, 1913, aged 71 years, nine months and20 days. She was married to Samuel Shaffer, of Stark County, February23, 1860. To them were born nine children, three sons and 6 daughters,a daughter and one son preceding her to the spirit world. Those withthe bereaved husband who are left to mourn the departure of a dear wifeand mother are Levi, Melissa, Cora, Myrtle, Emma, Pearl and Charles,also 17 grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
In 1865 she and her husband located on a farm west of Hudson, in SteubenCounty, Indiana, where they lived until three years ago. Mother Shaffergave her heart to God in early life and united with the EvangelicalChurch in Ohio, and later with the County Line Church, and now she hasjoined the Church above. She with her husband endeavored to train their children in a Christianlife, and were permitted to see them all come into the fold of theChurch. During her last three years of illness she suffered very much,but for it with Christian fortitude, and often expressed her desire tobe relieved and go home. Her one that desire was that her childrenmight so live as to meet her in having. Funeral services were conductedby W. H. FreshleSy, of Kendallville, at the Church of God in Helmer,March 28, 1913. Interment in Fairfield Cemetery."
