Facts and Events
Caroline was about 34 years when she married Henry Rendell in August 1843 at Exmouth, Devonshire. They had three children at Bristol; Frances Caroline, was born in December 1845, Henry was born in July 1847 and Harriet Margaretta was born in April 1849. The family immigrated to Melbourne, Victoria in 1851. Henry died suddenly in March 1852. Caroline and her young family returned to England a few months after her husband's death and a fourth child, Thomas Matthew was born in October 1852. It is unsure where they lived after returning to England but according to Francis, Caroline educated her children by teaching English. The younger son Thomas Matthew died in March 1857 in England aged 4 ½ years. In the 1861 Census Caroline S Rendell age 57, General Teacher; Frances C Rendell age 15, Scholar and Harriett M Rendell age 11, Scholar were recorded living at 4 Castle Street, Hastings. There is reason to believe that the family may have moved to Hackney, London after this. Not listed in 1866 Hastings Post Office Directory. Caroline and her two daughters came out to Australia again in 1869. They sailed from Gravesend in September aboard the "Lincolnshire" as second class passengers and were met by her son Henry when they arrived in Melbourne in December 1869. At time of death she lived at 88 Lydiard St, Ballarat, Victoria. References
