- ↑ 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.3 4.4 4.5 Known variously as Carl, Karl, Otto, and Charles. Howard Piepenbrink refers to him as "J. H. Hitzemann," born 8 Jun 1819/20, died 13 Dec 1896, and supplies for him the same photo of Carl and Maria that we have. Ronna Lounsbery lists him as Otto Charles "Karl" Hitzemann, Sr., born 8 Jun 1819, died 23 Dec 1896. A Lake County heritage book calls him Otto Charles "Karl" Hitzemann. Another old source had birth date 18 Apr 1819 (I can no longer find this source). Ronna's dates agree with the church death records (which are probably her source). He is listed as Otto, Sr. on his wife's death certificate. He is called Charles Hitzeman on the 1860/70/80 census and Charles Hitzman in an 1853 property sale. He is called J. H. Carl Hitzemann in the Trinity Crete marriage record.
- ↑ Church death record says he is from "Idensenmohr-Hessenland." Church marriage record says he is from "Idensen, Mohr." This is assumed to refer to the village of Idensermoor, which is the next village over from his wife's birthplace of Nordbruch. Since there is little mention of the Hitzemann name in the local church records, the family may not have been long in the area.
There is, however, a Johann Heinrich Conrad Hitzemann of Idensermoor 9, born 1822, listed in the St. Martin Hohnhorst marriage records. This could possibly be Carl's brother.
