  14. Carl Haegele was a farmer all of his life, but he also had excellent mathand mechanical abilities. He spent a great deal of time in his shopduring the winter and often mechanically overhauled his farm equipmenthimself.
Carl was a big man, over 6'3" and was known for his strength. In hisyouth he loved square dancing and met his wife, Daisy Belle Krumm, atthe Hawkeye dance hall, a popular social gather place in the community. His brother, Albert often called square dances there.
In 1954 Carl suffered a serious accident which resulted in the loss ofone of his eyes. His health was not good from that time on. He washowever, well liked and respected in the community, and all of the otherfarm families and merchants in the community worked together to bring inhis crops and help the family in any way that they could. At the end ofthe summer, Carl's wife, Daisy, held a pot luck dinner on the front yardof their home to thank everyone for their help. It was a very warm andhappy occasion.
Shortly after his birthday, May 17 in 1959, Carl became ill with whatwas finally diagnosed as phlebitis. Treatment was delayed and by thetime Carl was admitted to a hospital in late June, both of his lowerlegs had become gangrenous. The doctors advised that both legs wouldneed to be amputated, but he slipped into a coma and died a few dayslater. These events took place over a period of two or three weeks.
His mother, Anna Pfahl's name is listed on his death certificate asPhall, which is a phonetic spelling of Pfahl
