[edit] ObituaryCarl Nelson Folk was a caring family man with a strong business sense. He was born January 3, 1925 in South Bend, Indiana, to Howard and Beulah [Mangus] Folk. Carl grew up in North Liberty, Indiana, where he enjoyed school and excelled at basketball before his graduation area after high school, Carl joined the Navy and served during World War II and the USS Randalph as an electrician. Upon his discharge, he continued his education and both Ball State and the University of Indiana, where he studied science. While attending Ball State he met and fell in love with Barbara Henman. The couple were married on July 30, 1950 in Muncie, Indiana. Carl and his family lived in South Bend before settling in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he retired from The Shakespeare Company. Penn State's, after more than 20 years of service as Director of Industrial Relations. After retirement he continued to stay active in property management and managed the W. S. Dewing Building for over 30 years. Over the years Carl and Barbara traveled to many countries and enjoy their time together. His family includes his wife of 53 years, Barbara Folk of Kalamazoo; children: David and Holly Folk of Kalamazoo, James and Linda Folk of St. Joseph, Michigan, and Nancy and Mike Howard of Scott, Michigan; siblings: Glenn and Robert Folk and Evelyn Davis; and grandchildren: Steve, Chris and Harrison Folk, Lisa, Melanie, Susan and Carl Howard. Carl died on November 12, 2003, in Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, November 16, from 3 to 5 PM in the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, Michigan. A celebration of life service will be held on Monday at 11 AM in the first United Methodist Church, were Carl was a member.
