1880 census: can't find him

1900 census: Ward 1, Mendota Twshp, La Salle County, IL

  • Chas. A. Betz, b. April 1853, 47; married 23 years, b. Illinois (incorrect), parents born Germany; looks like he might be a butcher.
  • Margaret, wife, b. Mar 1858, 42; married 23 years; 7 children 6 living; b. Illinois
  • Netty M or W., daughter, b. July 1871 Kansas (!) [from previous marriage of Charles?]
  • Jacob H., son [named after grandfather?], b. Mar 1873 Kansas [from previous marriage of Charles?]
  • Elmer Y., son, b. Dec 1889, age 10, b. Kansas
  • Elsa C., dau, b. Dec 1889, age 10, b. Kansas

This would place their marriage in 1877. Illinois State Marriage Index:

Note: while I cannot find a previous marriage for Charles Betz, I do find a previous marriage for Margaretha Jost to Michael Carnes; m. 6 May 1876 in Adams Co-- less than a year before marriage to Charles. In addition, I find a 1905 marriage of Margaret B. Jost:

Can't find any of the above family members in 1880 census. Nor in 1910.

Might be in Arapahoe Co., Colorado in 1885 (see ancestry.com Colorado State Census 1885).
