Carey Campbell was born in Decatur, OH in 1834. As a young man of 25 he moved with his father to Illinois. Carey bought a farm in Yates Twp., McClean Co. Illinois. When the Civil War came, Carey volunteered and served with distinction, first as a corporal and finally a first sergeant, in Co. B, 47th Illinois Volunteer Regiment from 1861 to 1865. After the war in 1873, he married Persis Catherine Muzzy, daughter of Addison Muzzy and Laura Ann Pease. In 1881-82 Carey and his family three children, Samuel McArthur, Wirt McLean, and Laura Bayne, moved to Franklin Co., KS where he bought a farm. Like his father, James, he retired to Centerville, Appanoose Co., IA and died there in 1913.
