Betty Rose Pitzer, 75, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 24, 1932 in Lebanon, Indiana, daughter of the late Ruth Laughner Shoemaker and Buren Shoemaker.
Betty Rose grew up on the family farm outside of Zionsville, Indiana, graduated from Zionsville High School and attended Purdue University. She married John Pitzer on June 1, 1951. In 1960 she and John moved to Ithaca where they settled to raise their family.
Betty Rose and John loved the natural beauty of the Ithaca area. They especially enjoyed fishing and boating on beautiful Cayuga Lake and passed their appreciation for this treasured activity to their children and grandchildren. Betty Rose was a wonderful gardener. She grew beautiful roses, vibrant flowers and had a bountiful vegetable garden that she took great pride in.
The center of Betty Rose's life was always her family. They were the light and highlight of her life. She was an avid supporter of her children's and grandchildren's athletics and other activities, attending countless games, concerts and events. In addition to her own children and grandchildren, Betty Rose nurtured two generations of Ithaca kids, whom she graciously welcomed into her home, where everyone was always welcome, comfortable and well fed! She truly embodied and loved her role of mom and grandma.
Betty Rose was an amazing caregiver to her husband. Her dedication, commitment and love, was and will continue to be a great inspiration to her family.
In addition to her husband, John, she is survived by her children, Elizabeth and Brad Bilinski, Brian and Mary Ann Pitzer and J. David and Melanie Pitzer; her grandchildren, Tim and Kevin Bilinski, Scott and Matthew Pitzer, Allison (Josh) Takagishi, Kyle (Heather) Pitzer, Emily Pitzer and Drew Pitzer and her great-granddaughter, Madelyn Lily Takagishi who was born March 17, 2008. She is also survived by her brother and sister in law, William and JoAnn Shoemaker, several nieces, nephews and cousins and her beloved dog, Rosie. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her brother, James Shoemaker and her beloved grandson, Brent Pitzer.
