    Mrs. Bessie Irene Gates, 74, of 3154 E. Enos Ave., was dead on arrival at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Hospital.

    A resident of Springfield most of her life, Mrs. Gates was born in Athens, the daughter of Elmer and Sarah Doom.

    Surviving are her husband, Charles D.; one daughter, DeVilla Gates, of Springfield; and one half-sister. Mrs. Goldie Hendrix, of Los Angeles, Calif.

    Services were at Ellinger and Kunz Funeral Home.

    Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
