Bertie Kempson was born in 1882 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of a straw hat sewer named Sarah Ann Kempson, formerly Smith, and her husband James Kempson, a plait bleacher and bricklayer. The 1891 census finds Bertie living with his mother and siblings at Chobham Street in Luton. Bertie's father was in jail in St Albans on census night; James Kempson was convicted many times of poaching and related offences.

By 1901 the family had moved to Essex Street and Bertie was working as a straw hat blocker.

On 4th May 1907, aged 25, Bertie married a Rose Muskett. They had one daughter, Eva, in 1909. The 1911 census finds Bertie, Rose and Eva living at 77 Cambridge Street. Bertie's parents at the time were living in the same street. Bertie's father died on 2nd March 1915. Bertie's daughter Eva died just three weeks later, aged six. Bertie and Rose do not appear to have had any other children. Bertie's mother died in 1919.

Bertie died in 1925, aged 43. Rose outlived him by about 19 years.
