Mary Ann Kempson was born in 1869 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer named Sarah Ann Kempson, formerly Smith, and her husband James Kempson, a plait bleacher and bricklayer. She was the couple's second child, although the first child had died as a baby before Mary Ann was born.

Mary Ann was baptised on 9th August 1870 at the parish church of St Mary's in Luton, but died shortly after her baptism, aged one year old.
