Disputed Lineages

Cawley makes Bertha the daughter of William (II) de Briouse and Bertha de Hereford, basing this on an assertion in Domesday Descendants, and noting that he has not located a primary source to confirm this.

John P. Ravilious, in a 2010 posting to soc.genealogy.medieval, argues that she was the daughter of William Braose and Matilda St Valery. He bases this on a charter which he feels shows that the William shown as Bertha's husband on this page was in fact married to Avicia, and on an IPM which gives Bertha's husband as the son of the William shown here, and which deals with the manor of Tetbury. Since the manor of Tetbury "came to William de Braose (d. 1211) as part or all of the maritagium of his wife Maud de St. Valery", it follows that Bertha was a daughter of this couple, rather than of this William de Braose's parents, who didn't hold Tetbury. (According to the Victoria County History cited below, part of Tetbury was granted to Walter de Beauchamp in 1221 by Reynold de Beauchamp, a son of the William de Breuse who died in 1211.)
