Benjamin Paterson of Ballaird, Ayrshire, died before 1785 (family bible); his father Benjamin Paterson owned Ballaird and Glentig and he had a brother, Fergus Paterson, who owned Ballaird in 1764 (family letters). Ballaird is in the parish of Colmonell, Ayrshire. According to “A directory of Landownership in Scotland c. 1770” lands at Ballantrae, Ayrshire, worth 185 pounds, 16 shillings and 8 pence, were owned by Benjamin Paterson of Glentig. His name does not occur in connection with Colmonell property. Ballaird had been bought by Benjamin Paterson, a London merchant, from Alexander Kennedy in 1631 (family letters). From “Decennial indexes to the services of heirs in Scotland 1700-1859”: Reg. 22sep1790. Alexander Barton, son of B. Barton, comm. clerk, Glasgow, to his uncle Fergus Paterson of Baillaird, heir gen. Thus Benjamin must have had a son and heir, Fergus, who died before 22sep1790. There is also the possibility that instead of uncle, greatuncle was the case.
