He was probably the son of Daniel Haines. Benjamin's obituary gives his age as 98 and states that he fought in the War of 1812. Father: Daniel H. Haines b: bef. 1782 in Baltimore Co, Maryland Mother: Ann Sollars From Colonial Families of Anne Arundel County, Maryland Benjamin Haines, age 85, applied for a pension on 22 May, 1878, claiming he was a private in Capt. Burgett's [Burgess'] Co. of DM Militia during the War of 1812. He stated he volunteered on 1 Aug 1814 and was discharged in Oct 1814. After his discharge, he resided in AA Co, MD, until about 1828, when he returned to Carroll Co. where he bought his residence in Mechanicsville. He was described as having black hair and light colored eyes, and as being 5'10" in height. William H. Lamotte and Edwin Shipley were witnesses. His application was rejected on 23 Sep 1878 because his name was not shown on the rolls of either Capt. Roderick Burgess or Capt. Thomas Burgess. Obituary from the Democratic Advocate on 26 Dec 1885 On Sunday morning last Benjamin Haines, of Gamber, died, aged 98 years. He was buried at Mt. Pleasant M.E. Church. The funeral was preached by Rev. J.W. Floyd, from the text 9th verse, 71st Psalm-"Cast me not off in the time of old age. Forsake me not when my strength faileth."
