! 1. Headstone-- Liberty Cemetary, Smith Co.,MS--Since no headstone was on record in Vicksburg and given the information in note # 6, a headstone was erected in the cemetary where his children were buried. ! 1. Family Records--Tradition says his name is William Beard and he died in the Cival War. Phone call to My Aunt Meryl Langford--She stated that William Beard lived with a Williams Family South of Raleigh in Smith County: that she was told that she was related to the Williams, Wilburns, and others: that her grandfather Samuel Douglas Beard's Mother's family moved to Oklahoma: that Samuel D. was born in Newton Co.,MS. ! 2. 1870 Census Smith County,Mississippi--Has Samuel D. Beard and Laura L. Beard, living with Mary Art Paker age 32,and Green W. Paker age 30. ! 3. 1860 Census--Newton Co.,MS--Page 37-Benjamin Beard, age 40 or 48 male, born MS; Anuca or Anica Beard, age 22 female, born MS. Samuel Beard, age 4 male, born MS; Laura Beard, age 1 female, born Ms. Benjamin Beard's age has to be incorrect here: he should be 25. ! 4. 1850 Census Smith Co.,MS--Has a William Beard, age 20 living with a Williams Family. This age could be 5 yrs. off. ! 5.Marriage Records--Leake Co.,MS--List a Benjamin F. Beard married a Mary Wilburn, Jan 15,1856. Rebecca Pearson,Circuit Court, Carthage, Leake Co.,MS 39051. Fee $1.50. This was signed by a B.W. Beard. ! 6.Cival War Records List a Benjamin F. Beard, Company I, 7 Miss.Cavalry and a B.W. Beard, Company G,46 Regiment MS Volunteers.--Benjamin F. Beard was listed as being from Ponotoc,MS. B.W.Beard was listed as being from Trenton, Smith Co.,MS-- The 6th (Balfour's) Battation MS Infantry was organized about April 1862. It was afterwards increased to a Regiment and it's desigation changed to the 46th Regiment MS Infantryby S.O.No.32,Hd.Qrs.24 Dist.,Dept.MS. and E.La., dated Vicksburg, Dec.2, 1862.--He was listed on the muster roll for Mar 17 to May 13,1862.(He was apparently one of the first to voluteer.) Listed on Muster Roll of Feb 28 to Oct.31,1863 it was noted in the remarks that he had died at Vicksburg Hospital May 29,1863. His Captain in a letter stated that B.W. Beard was Born in Tenn age 28 -5'10" with fair complexion, blue eyes, and black hair. It does not state where he was buried but since it was at the beginning of the 47 day seige of Vicksburg there was no way of burying him anywhere else. A check of the Vicksburg City (Confederate Soliders) Cemetary shows no Beard buried there, nor is there one listed at the Vicksburg National Military Cemetary (Union Soliders). It is most probable that Benjamin W. Beard is one of the unknown soldiers in the Conferate Cemetary. ! 7. 1840 Census Leake County,Mississippi pg. 33--Has a Benjamin Beard Family with Males,1-under 5; 1-15 to 20; 1-20 to 30; 1-50 to 60. Females, 2-under 5; 1- 20 to 30; 1- 40 to 50, 1-60 to 70. Page 32 of Leake Co. has Willis Wilborn whose daugter married my Benjamin. I think this is Benjamin-1(under 5) His Father-1(20-30) & His Grandfather 1(50-60) that is listed as head of the house Benjamin. ! 8. A newspaper article states "$250 Reward-- William G. Beard, did on the 21st day of January,1845, at Raleigh, in Smith Co.,in this state (MS),inflict several mortal wounds on the body of Peter G. Campbell, with a pocket knife, and the said Beard did escape from jail and is now at large." This may be our missing link. My Benj. would have been about 10 yrs. of age at the time and may have lived with the Williams in 1850. ! 9. 1850 Census Leake Co.,MS pg.08--J.Beard age 38 is listed as head of the house. Does not fit! Compare this with 1840 Leake Co.Census it looks good but I checked 1860 Leake Co. found Jonathon Beard. Looking at birth places of children they were not in Leake Co. in 1840. ! 10.L.D.S. Church Records: REF 5011489 02 S/ 00008-6 077 40. Sept.20,1989 for personal work.
