Benjamin Beall believed in insuring the future of his sons by requiring them to learn a trade. His will states, “one son to be bound out to a blacksmith; one son to be bound out to a bricklayer; and one son to be bound out to a house carpenter; and each son to have six years’ schooling.” In the case of his son Lloyd, a good blacksmith went wrong, for he enlisted in the Continental Army in 1776 and died in 1817 a Colonel, U.
