Benjamin Ashley was brought up by his step father Joseph Williston, and learned the trade of a carpenter and housewright. He settled in that part of West Springfield which is now callled Ashelyville from the fact that his descendants became so numerous and such extensive land owners in that section of the town. He accumulated a considerable property, which at his death included a wharf, millpond and mills, besides a large amount of land.
