Barbara Sprinkle appears to have a son born out-of-wedlock with Maj. Ballard Smith prior to her marriage to Edward Howe. Ballard Smith, in his will written in Louisa County, Virginia in 1794, included the following:

To Francis Smith (alias Sprankle) who is a natural son begot by me upon the body of Barbary Spankle, 8,006 acres land in Jefferson Co. Kentucky by patent 10 Jul 1786.

We know that Maj. Ballard Smith was in Kentucky (Jefferson and Lincoln Counties and likely the surrounding areas) during the time period of 1784-1787, as he had been granted several land grants for his military service; this is the likely time period of the birth of the above-named Francis Smith, alias Sprankle (Sprinkle).
