SHOEMAKER PIONEERS BY BENJAMIN H SHOEMAKER, III - 1975:
Baltzer Shoemaker, third son of Adam Sr., resided in that part of Frederick County, Maryland that later became Washington County. The 1776 Census of Frederick County (Elizabeth Hundred section) lists Baltzer as 40 years of age, which is apparently an error. Evidently the record was copied as 40 instead of 46.
Baltzer and Christianna Shoemaker, age 46 & 40, and their children: Michael, age 13; Jacob, age 10; Catherine, age 8; John, age 7; and Susanna, age 3, all resided in Elizabeth Hundred (renamed Hagerstown in 1830's), Frederick County, Maryland. In 1798, Baltzer Shoemaker bought 50 acres of land, called "Rhodes Folly" in Washington County, Maryland, and he sold it again in 1803. Baltis Shoemaker (Baltzer) was taxed as an inmate in Bethel Township, then Bedford, now Fulton County, Pennsylvania, in 1783. Here he had been warned about reporting for military duty.
In 1803, Baltzer removed to Monongalla County, now West Virginia, where his daughter, Susanna, wife of Andrew Garlow lived. Here he died in the year, 1809. Baltzer's will mentions three children only: his son, John; his daughter, Susanna Garlow, formerly Susanna Lott; and his daughter, Christina, wife of Zachariah Rhodes. The names, Catherine and Christina, were used interchangeably by the early German families. His son, Jacob, not mentioned in his will, would have been of the same age as Jacob Jr., son of Jacob and Anna Elizabeth (D7), and it is possible there has been a confusion here.
