Civil War participation:

On August 15, 1862 he enlisted into company F 21st Wisconsin infantry from Bryon, Wisconsin.

He was a corporal, taken prisoner at Jefferson, TN on Dec 30, 1862. Mustered out of service June 8, 1865 near Washington, DC. The regimate returned to Milwaukee, Wi and was disbanded June 17, 1865.

His discharge papers describe Sterling Ross as 5 ft 9 in. in height, light complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, and by occupation a carpenter.
