Augustus Newton was a barber in Rocly Ford, Ga. He was elected as sheriff of Rocky Ford and served in that office until his death. On some occasions he would wear his pistol in a sholder holster, and his blackjack in his rear pocket while he cut hair.

The 1900 US Census lists Augustus as residing in Militia District 80, Screven, Georgia. It also shows his father to be Augustus R. and his mother to be Canan L Newton.

In 1900 Augustus W. was still single.
