Dr. Douglass was educated at Columbia (or Columbian) Academy, but his medical course was taken at Nashville, Tenn, where he was graduated in medicine in 1861. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in Company C, Sixth Mississippi Infantry regiment under General Robert Lowery. He was in the battle of Shiloh, Corinth where he was wounded, Port Gibson, Banker's Creek, Jackson, the engagements of the Georgia campaign, was with Hood in Tennessee (being wounded in Franklin), and after recovering was in the engagement at Salma, Ala. While at Bowling Green he was transferred to the medical department as assistant surgeon, in which capacity he acted until after the evacuation of Tennessee. Dr. Douglass served in the Texas lower house of the 14th, 15th, and 16th legislatures, and he represented the senatorial district in the 26th and 29th legislature. In about 1892 he was chairman of the State Board of Health.
