Facts and Events
Family Bible says he died March 17, 1833 Served in the War of 1812. Moved to a farm in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, west of Lake County where his father and mother are buried. From Holly Ardinger: He was a private in the company of Captain Daniel Blish during the War of 1812. Asa and Polly were married in Granger County, OH by Joseph Call, a clergyman. Asa died at Berlin, Huron County, OH. After being widowed, Polly and some kids moved to Cattanaugus County, NY. In 1838, they moved to South Bend, IN. She had married a Mr. James Finch of Fulton, IL by 1851. One of the more interesting family legends is that Asa Call (Asa and Ambrose's father) fathered President Garfield. This is based on the fact that the Call farm adjoined the Garfield farm in Cuyahoga County, OH and that Garfield bore a striking resemblance to Asa and Ambrose and other Call men. I would guess there was also other info that people passed on verbally without ever writing down. Nobody at Garfield's memorial in Ohio knew of any question re: Garfield's parentage. My dad recalls hearing that Garfield's father was off at war when Asa Call went to visit Mrs. Garfield. I read a biography of Garfield and didn't note any war activity for Mr. Garfield at that time. It remains a mystery. Letter from Bountiful Valley Utah on Oct. 5, 1888. From Anson Call (1810-1890) to my great grandfather George Casper Call (1860-1934). :" . . .With all of these I was personally acquainted, and also was I acquainted with Asa, who married his cousin, my father's [Cyril Call's] oldest sister Zuba [or Azuba]. The following are the names of the first Asa's children. . . . Asa who married his cousin Betsy, the daughter of Cyrus and she died without children. Asa then married Polly [or Mary] Metcalf.
