[edit] Obituary"Arthur Hirsch "Art" Sultan, 85, of Epping Forest, died of cancer Oct. 25 at the Spa Creek Center, Genesis ElderCare Network, after a 10-day illness. The son of the late Rose Littman and William Harry Sultan, Mr. Sultan was born April 12, 1920, in New Bern, N.C., and graduated from Salisbury (N.C.) High School in 1938. He was a yeoman second class in the Navy aboard the battleship USS Colorado from 1940 to 1946, receiving the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the American Defense Fleet Clasp. He was a civilian illustrator and cartographer at Andrews Air Force Base, where he worked from 1958 until retiring in 1984. He received numerous awards for graphic excellence during his career, culminating in one of his free-form sculptures being displayed in the Rotunda at the U.S. Capitol. He also designed numerous cards for all occasions and in 1988 did the official street map cartography for Epping Forest, which is still in use today. In 1967 he married Marjorie Wells Sultan, who died April 20, 1992. He is survived by three second cousins. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 5 at the Epping Forest Chapel, with burial in Temple B'nai Sholem Cemetery in New Bern. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Epping Forest Chapel, 345 Epping Way, Annapolis, MD 21401." References
