Arthur Bedford Lewis was born on 31st December 1886 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of a straw hat sewer named Susannah Priscilla Moss and Thomas Lewis, a rag and bone man. Arthur was named after his father's brother.
Young Arthur appears in the 1891 census living at 146 Chapel Street in Luton with his parents, siblings and his maternal grandparents. In 1901 they were at 148 Chapel Street. Some time between 1901 and 1911 they moved just around the corner to 29 South Road. By the time of the 1911 census Arthur was working as a labourer.
Arthur's father Thomas died in 1916. Arthur does not appear to have married. At the outbreak of the Second World War he was living with his mother and two sisters at 29 South Road, and working as a firewood seller. He died in 1945, aged 58, and was buried at the General Cemetery on Rothesay Road in Luton, in the same grave as his father, brother Percy and sister Ethel. His mother survived him by about five years.
