Aretta was almost grown when her parents moved to Ohio County. She married Samuel Pate of Ohio County in 1824. Arretta and Samuel were the parents of thirteen (possibly sixteen) children. All of them except ten died as infants.

They lived in Ohio County for a few years, where their oldest child was buried. Then they moved to Hancock County in 1826. They remained there the remainder of their lives. In a short time, they acquired a comfortale fortune.
