BIOGRAPHY: ARNOLD KUSTER, bricklayer; b. Krefeld, GE; bpt 6-9-1669, Kaldenkirchen, DEU; m. 6-24-1691, Krefeld, GE, GERTRUD CONRADS or Rebecca NUZAM (d. 1731, Hanover Twp., Berks co., PA); d. 1739, Manatawney, located at the mouth of Sprogell's Run, Montgomery co., PA. He came to Germantown, PA, with his parents in 1684. He attended school under FRANCIS DANIEL PASTORIUS. In all probability Arnold did not serve in the militia because this would have meant bearing arms. The Mennonites were pacifist, and Arnold remained a Mennonite throughout his life. He also refused to be a Germantown committeeman in 1702 because of conscientious scruples. Such a position involved the taking of an oath which was against his principles. He remained in Germantown until 1714, at which time he migrated to the western part of Philadelphia co. He bought 316 acres of land in 1714 in the "Manatawney tract", and it is on this plantation, situated on the banks of the Schuykill River, Hanover Township, he and his family settled.
