Facts and Events
Died from a broken neck. There was a newspaper article in 1902 about theaccident: from the Paterson Daily Press Monday Evening July 21, 1902. The article states: JUMPED AND BROKE HIS NECK. Mr. Buis' son, who stayed behind the runaway horse, brought up unhurt. Aries Buis, aged 60, a well known farmer of Totowa borough, last evening was on his way to Paterson with his son. On the road above Laurel Grove Cemetery the horse became frightened atthe barking of a dog that ran out from a yard. The son was driving and the horse getting the bit between its teeth he was unable to check it's wild run down the hill. THe father reached over and seized the reins, when one of them broke off short. The elder man, fearing that the horse would dash down the embankment and into the river, where there is a sharp turn at the Hillary streetbridge, jumped from the carraige. He landed on his head and shoulders and broke his neck. The son remained in the vehicle and the affrighted animal madethe turn in safety and dashed down Totowa Avenue for a mile before it stoppedfrom exhaustion. The young man made his way back wht the horse to where hisfather had jumped. As he neared the place he saw a crowd and on reaching thespotfound that his parent was dead. The son at first would not believe this, and tried to restore him to consciousness, but life was extinct, death having ensued aomost instantly, as persons say who saw Mr. Buis jump and ran to his aid. County Physician McBride granted a certificate. The deceased leaves awife and six adult children. Arrived on the SS Amsterdam. He & Jantje & family were passengers 119 -126.
