  2.   It took a while to establish who Edouard's father was and this was the progress I made before family in Dabo looked at the actual record books in Dabo and confirmed the information provided now for the relationships of Antoine Scherno.

His son Edouard was born in 1865 however Antoine only recognised him as his son thirty years later on the 30th August 1895. Irrespective of which Antoine Scherno is Edouard's father all Scherno's from Dabo descended from Jacobi Scherno and Véronique Scheider.

The thoughts I have about this and trying to work out further information about who Edouard's father was is that he was most likely married to someone else which is why he took so long to recognise the child he had with Madeleine.

    Probable year of birth

Based on likely ages I would suggest he was born between 1820 and 1835.

1800 would make them 95 in 1895, while possible today mortality in the 1800's meant that a man in his 70's had a long life and was most likely in his last few years.
1820 would make them 75 when recognising Edouard as their son.
1835 is the year Madeleine was born.
1845 is less likely because today and in the 1800's unwed mother's are typically younger than their childs father. This however would still be possible with the father being 20 years old.
    Viable options

The most likely yet currently unconfirmed Antoine Scherno was born in 1821 (Son of Antoine Scherno and Marie Anne Lambour, listed below). After having their first child in the years prior, he married Marie Anne Carabin in Dabo on the 28th January 1854, not only would this be a relevant time frame but Marie Anne and Madeleine were half-sisters via their father Florent Carabin. Antoine would have been about 44 when Edouard was born and about 74 when he acknowledged him as his son. This Antoine Scherno lived in La Hoube and the official documents identifying and recognising Edouard as Antoine's son is an Antoine Scherno who lived in La Hoube.
Antoine Scherno and Marie Anne Kobe married in Dabo on the 20th April 1847. Assuming that my suspicions are correct than this Antoine was about 22 when he married, then he would be about 40 when he fathered Edouard and would have been about seventy when he acknowledged him as his son. I suspect that this could be the same person as Antoine Scherno. (Born 1825 to Louis Scherno and Marie Anne Schwaller).
There is an Antoine Scherno listed as being in the french military at the time but apart from that I currently have no further information. Was he a soldier visiting home or on his way off to a conflict zone?
People named Antoine Scherno who appear in searches but are not possible

Antoine Scherno who married Marie Anne Lambour, died in 1825. (Son of Louis Scherno and Elisabeth Brill)
Francois Antoine Scherno who married Catharina Blaess and Odile Huber, died in 1834.
Francois Antoine Scherno who married Catherine Oswald, Catherine Stam and Marie Appoline Stutzel and being born in 1765 he would have been 100 when Edouard was born and would not have been alive 30 years later to acknowledge him.

He was married to Madeleine's sister which is likely why it took him so long to confirm he was Edouard's father.
