Some time during the 1950s when I was a callow teenager my Mother, Step-father and I visited one of Aunt Annie and Uncle John's daughters in Electra. I believe this Ratcliffe daughter was my Mother's favorite cousin and she had kept in touch with her all through the years.

This Cousin had married a man named Dewey Dovel. I know this because I have 2 hand-painted ceramic pictures which she did. She put her married name on them--wouldn't do that these days. These depict the TX Bluebonnets and I think they are quite charming and definitely a treasure from the 50's 'ceramic era'. I have these hanging in my vacation home in a bedroom.

I remember the visit well. Electra was quite 'western' and everyone wore cowboy boots, etc. The Dovel family business was a slaughter house. This was an eye-opener for me. I grew up on a farm where we had 'killings' when I was a child. But I had never been to a commercial place where this was done. I watched them kill the steer, gut it and dress the meat. WOW!

I remember sleeping on the floor of a small well furnished living room. They had a grandfather clock which struck every quarter hour and played the Winchester chime on the hour. Needless to say I did not sleep since I was not accustomed to a striking clock.
