RESIDENCES: Cypress Bayou, Arkansas County, AR (1871-1879?) Smith's Mills, Henderson County, KY (1879-????) Poseyville, Posey County, IN (????-????) Mt. Vernon, Posey County, IN (1893-1841)

As told to me by my Mother, Flossie Crowder. M. Ullman

Grandfather had only a fourth grade education but he loved to read. He read the newspaper from cover to cover. He hated to get a newspaper that had been left rumpled and the pages folded open. He always read to the children in the evening. They loved to hear The Wizard of Oz stories and he hated to read them.

Grandfather worked on construction crews for the railroad. The family lived briefly in Poseyville, IN and I believe Terre Haute, IN. My Mother said he was very well liked by the men who worked for him. He could lay track in such a way that when the surveyors came behind him the track did not have to be moved because his line was so accurate.

Grandfather and Grandmother had lots of friends and their home was a gathering place for adults and children. They would play cards, drink beer, and play the piano on Saturday evenings. Grandmother could play the piano by ear. All the children had music lessons. Their friends would come to their home where they would play and sing.

Grandfather and Grandmother's home was the polling place for their district. Election day was always a time for fun and excitement. Grandfather was a union organizer for the Railroad which was also a cause for much activity at their home.

Grandfather and Grandmother were married 5 years and were about to adopt 2 orphaned children when Grandmother became pregnant with twins.

My Mother frequently told me that Grandfather was born in DeWitt County, AR. RACE White
