Biography
Anna Margaretha Pfoh was born at Schluchtern about 1703, the daughter of Georg Pfoh and Anna Maria Hertzog. She married Martin Schwartz, a Weingärtner (vine dresser), at Dürrenzimmern in 1728 and lived at Schluchtern, where five children were born and baptized, three of whom died in infancy. In the summer of 1738 Martin and Anna Margaretha and their two surviving children left Schluchtern with Anna Margaretha's relatives, Hans Georg Sommer and his family, took passage on the ship "St. Andrew" and arrived in Philadelphia, October 27, 1738. A death date for Anna Margaretha has not been found but she died in Pennsylvania, quite possibly soon after arriving. Martin was remarried by 1740 and living at Germantown, north of Philadelphia. About 1762 the Schwartz family, along with the Sommers, left Pennsylvania and moved south to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where they took up land on Toms Brook, a tributary of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, in what is now Shenandoah County, Virginia.
