no children teacher Obituary from the Lethbridge Herald, Tuesday, 7 Mar 1995: When Anna Marie Wylie was born prematurely in 1905 Nebraska, her prospects didn't look good. She weighed slightly more than a kilogram, a silver dollar was larger than her head. "Her parents kept this little thing in a cigar box, fed it mother's milk with an eye-dropper and kept it warm on a rocking chair near the stove", said Gordon Leigh, Wylie's longtime associate at the John Howard Society of Lethbridge. "She fought off the odds then and she continued to fight all her life." The feisty little woman died Wednesday at 89 after a lifetime of championing causes in which she believed. Probably closest to her heart was the John Howard Society, an organization she helped found in Lethbridge in 1949 to help convicts released from jail re-integrate into the community. She was best known for organizing the society's annual house and garden tour, coupled with a tea at the Lethbridge Correctional Center. The tour and tea, attended by about 500 people each summer, riases funds for the society and gives the public an opportunity to visit the correctional centre. Wylie tirelessly recruited homes for the tour, which ranged from historical sites to those featuring the latest technology such as solar heating, to others outstanding fo rtheir beauty or art or antique collections. Wylie's steadfastneww isjpired more than a gneration of southern Alberta children, too. First as a schoolteacher, then as a Sunday School teacher at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, she provided guidance which was never forgotten, said Cecily Kenwood, a friend and fellow volunteer for the John Howard Society. "She and her husband, Lou, were genuine, salt-of-the-earth, good Christian people who did volunteer work for all the right reasons,k not to pad a resume or gain work contacts. In 1977 Marie was awarded the Queen Jubilee Medal for her community involvement. She received the Order of Canada in 1993 and also on two other occasions. Marie received an Honorary Life Membership in the John Howard Society of alberta and was Honorary President of the Provincial Board. For the past 24 years Marie has organized the Annual House and Garden Tour and Tea which is held in Lethbridge. She was an active member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and for 20 years she was the Sunday School Superintendent. From Lois Phipps Price January 1995: Marie was born in Callway, Nebraska, and came to Burdett, Alberta, when she was five years old. She was educated at Morning Star shcool and then went to Normal School in Lethbridge. She taught for many years in Lethbridge schools, teaching two and three gnerations of pupils. In 1946 she married Louis Wylie and continued to live in Lethbridge. |
