In his petition to the May, 1852, term of the Westmoreland County Orphans' Court, Jacob, Adam's only son, asked that the real estate of his father be divided among Adam's heirs if such division could be done "without prejudice to or spoiling the whole and if not to appraise the same according to law." "Twelve free honest and lawful men" met with the sheriff at the dwelling of the deceased and determined that the property could be divided in such a way as to give "lands and tenements" to each of Adam's living children. Each child selected his/her share in the following order: Jacob, Tract E of 88 acres, $22.33 per acre; Elizabeth Mohler, Tract B of 115 acres at $17.60 per acre; Henry George for his wife, Maria, Tract 6 of 67 acres at $17 per acre; Susannah Shetler, Tract D of 152 3/4 acres at $25 per acre; and Abraham Lenhart for his wife, the remaining tract, Tract A of 114 3/4 acres at $21.66 per acre. The five in turn were to make annual interest payments to Solomon Lennart, the guardian of Margaret's children, all minors, and to Wiliam Ashbaugh, husband of Sarah, also deceased, as long as he lived, then payment to their children. The 1850 U. S. Census had listed the value of Adam's real estate at $8,000.
