The Gibsonburg Derrick Gibsonburg, Sandusky CO, OH March 4, 1897 Page 1, column 2:

Jas. Mahern A Bigamist. He is Exposed by His Own Daughter James Mahern, a middle-aged man who worked in the blacksmith shop of the G ibsonburg Machine company, and who had some trouble with Frank Loveberr y, the manager, and quit, proves to be a worse man than any one here had e ver supposed him to be. It will be remembered that he left here about a mo nth ago and that he took Anna Fernburg with him. A short time after his de parture, we received a letter from him, in which he stated that he and An na were married at Toledo , after leaving here, and requesting us to se nd his paper to Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. It will also be remembered t hat his daughter Anna, who lives in Chicago, made him a visit here last su mmer. James had always passed himself off for a widower, while he has a wi fe living in Chicago. Mrs. Wilson Spohn received a letter from Miss Anna M ahern, the daughter, last Tuesday night, in which she exposes her fath er in his criminal work, hearing her father had gone away from here, and t hat he had married Anna Fernburg. Miss Mahern says her mother is livi ng in Chicago, and is a hard working woman, and that there never has be en any divorce granted. She asked Mrs. Sphon to publish her report of t he matter that everyone in Gibsonburg may know what kind of a man he is. We feel sorry for Anna Fernberg that she should allow herself to be lead a stray by such a villain. We hope that he may be made to suffer for the rui nation of this innocent girl. We have Miss Anna Mahern's letter in our pos ition , and if any doubt the truthfulness of this report, we are prepar ed to convince them. Girls cannot be too careful about picking up every man who chances to smi le sweetly upon them. There are a number of married men in Gibsonburg w ho have been playing the single man racket, and other girls will be ruin ed unless they heed the Derrick's warning.
