Facts and Events
Surname in question, as it does not appear in any records. First reference occurs in the Dutch Church Records of New Amsterdam, when on 14 Jan 1647, Anne, the wife of Nicholas Stillwell, was a sponsor at the baptism of Anna, daughter of John Harten, in the Dutch Church, at New Amsterdam. She is referred to as Mistress Anne Stillwell, an appellation of restricted use and confined to those of good station. After her husband’s death, she moved to Gravesend and bought a house on land that once belonged to Nicholas. Not long after that, she married the local magistrate, William Wilkins. He died four years later, and Anne married again in 1679 to William Foster of Jamaica, Long Island. She apparently left no will, and may have just given her property to her children. (John E. Stillwell, M.D.; Stillwell Genealogy, Vol I, pp 88-90; New York City, 1929.) |
