Introducing Ann (Unknown), Wife of William Davis Hawkins, of Maryland____________________
Ann's Tombstone in the Pine Creek Cemetery, O'Hara Twp, Allegheny Co, PA reads:
OUR MOTHER
ANN
WIFE OF
WM D HAWKINS Esq.
DIED DEC. 29 1860
AGED 80 YEARS
82 DAYS
If this information is correct, Ann was born on 7 September 1780. However, in the 1850 US Federal Census, Indiana Twp, Allegheny Co, PA, 13 Sept 1850, p67, h/h 192/192, she was listed with her husband and family as Hawkins, William D 85Y from MD, Ann 79 MD, Elizabeth 59 PA, and Hosea 52 MD. If this is true, Ann was born in Maryland c1771. This may be the only federal census that listed Ann Hawkins by name.
Since Ann died on 29 December 1860, she should have been enumerated in the 1860 US Federal Census. However, the 1860 US Federal Census, Indiana Twp, Allegheny Co, PA, PO Sharpsburg, 26 June 1860, p182, h/h 393/393 showed their son, David Hawkins with his family, son Hosea, several servants, and an aged woman named Margaret Hawkins 91 PA blind. The age would be right if her tombstone was misread and should be 90 years 82 days rather than 80 years 82 days. If this census is true, Ann may have been born in PA. If this was not Ann aka Margaret, then who was this blind woman living in the family? We believe this was Ann.

Ann is about 90 years old when she died. The 80 years on her tombstone was 90 years; the stones are badly weathered. In the 1850 census she was 79 making her birth year c1771. In the 1860 she (Margaret) is 91 making her birth year c1769. If we split the difference she was born c1770 in Maryland. The couple was married possibly in Harford Co, MD c1790 with William as 25 and Ann as 20. We also believe her surname was Bell/Belle/Beall as their youngest known child, David Bell Hawkins, carries this unusual middle name, probably his mother’s surname.
We have considerable information on Bell and Beall families in the Harford-Baltimore Counties, Maryland area, but have not been able to find any proof of who Ann was at present.
