In 1851 Ann was a servant to Joseph and Harriet Brown in Copthorne Common, Worth, with a 40 year-old man Joseph Howard also living at the property and working as an agricultural labourer.

In 1861, a widowed Anne Howard was living next door to John and Mary Ann Stringer, who are listed as having a granddaughter Mary J. Howard living with them - these two are likely Ann Stringer and her daughter Mary Jane Howard. The Joseph Howard living with Ann in 1851 may have been related to the Edward Howard who was father of Mary Jane. There was an Edward Howard b. abt 1842 living in Worth in 1851 - this could be the one Ann married.
