Ann and her husband William brought their family to Australia arriving on 16 February 1884 in the "Stirlingshire". The passenger entry records give her religion as UP, Native Place or County as Lanark with no relations in the Colony. She was listed as aged 36. The shipping list shows the three boys, William aged 17, Peter aged 15 and Thomas aged 13, listed separately from their parents and young sisters Annie and Jane, and baby John. The boys have been listed with the other single men.
The 'Stirlingshire' passenger list in 1884 (when the Spaldings' arrived) also shows: James McDonald age 28, Mary Jane McDonald age 30, Mary McDonald age 6, and Maggie McDonald age 1 - There is not much chance that there is a connection. Note that James and Mary Jane McDonald also settled in Balmain as they had a child, Martin, registered in Balmain. Birth: NSW BDM 4508/1886 MCDONALD MARTIN T H JAMES MARY J BALMAIN
For William Spalding's death in 1913 there were also funeral notices inviting friends of Mr. & Mrs. John McDonald to attend the funeral of their late dearly loved uncle and friends of Mr. W. Hannah to attend the funeral of his late dearly loved uncle and officers and members of the court of Court "Foresters' Home" No. 6517 AOF Balmain. Myrtle (Spalding) Mackay remembers cousins named John and Martha McDonald, if the above funeral notice is taken literally calling William their uncle, then John McDonald would be the child of Ann's brother. They had no children, John returned to Scotland ill and died there.
Anne's probate papers are held by the NSW State Records: Series 4, Container SC002461, Item 59851. She left a will and her body was viewed by her daughter Nellie Nash (wife of Albert Ernest Nash of Gladesville, Engineer.)
Anne owned two properties; numbers 28 and 30 Roseberry Street Balmain, and left them both and other assets valued at 656 pounds to her youngest son Andrew. He was to provide accommodation to her husband, William as long as he paid the rates. Only if Andrew predeceased his father with no issue of his own would the assets pass to the other children. Not to the husband.
