Ann (or Annie) Hassan's origins have yet to be confirmed. She consistently claimed in the censuses to have been born in about 1857 in Ireland, and her marriage certificate says that her parents were a stone quarrier named John Hassan and his wife Annie Carmovan. Ann's first confirmed sighting is her marriage to a galvanizer named Peter Sweeney on 15th June 1883 at the Catholic Church of St Aloysius in the Springburn area of Glasgow. At the time of their marriage Annie was described as a cotton thread spinner. Peter had been born in rural south-west Scotland to Irish parents who had come over to Scotland in the wake of the Potato Famine.
Ann and Peter stayed in Glasgow after their marriage. They had ten children together, but sadly eight of them had died by the time of the 1911 census, and only two children appear in any of the censuses with them: their sons Andrew and Peter.
Ann died in Glasgow in on 29th August 1924. Her death certificate says she was 57, although if the ages she had given in the censuses were accurate she was probably nearer 67. Peter survived her by about eleven years.
