Andrew Sweeney was born in about 1885 in Glasgow, son of Ann Sweeney, formerly Hassan, and her husband Peter Sweeney, a galvanizer. Andrew appears in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census living with his parents in Glasgow. His parents had ten children, but only two were still living by the time of the 1911 census. Andrew was described in 1901 as a rivet heater and in 1911 as a sheet iron galvanizer.
