Marriage to Mary Fairfoul
Death? Bef 1749

Mary FAIRFOUL was christened 19dec1709 at Kincardine, Perthshire (latter day saints submission) and died in 1745 (“History of the Counties of Ayr and Wigtown” vol. 2 by James Paterson, Edinburgh, 1864, pp 406-409, chapter on Fairfull Smith of Auchindrane, supplied by G. Smith from Glasgow University Library). Mary married Andrew SMITH ((History etc., J Paterson, family letters) of the celebrated Scotch Brigade, in the service of the United States of Holland (J. Paterson). Andrew SMITH, an officer in Dutch Service married a Miss FAIRFULL (FAIRFUL/FAIRFIELL) of „Branedam“ (this is transcribed from handwriting in letters and undoubtedly wrongly spelt). Scottish Archives have the will of “Andrew Smith, lieutenant in Col. Stewart’s regiment of foot, in Flanders (see also Mary Fairfoull)”, registered 1749 in Edinburgh, and of “Mary Fairfoull, sometime spouse of dec. Lt. Andrew Smith, of Col. Stewart’s Regiment of foot in Flanders” registered 1749. Some Scottish regiments were in service to the States General of Holland, thus the term Dutch service. Andrew was descended from the Smiths of Westfield, Dunbartonshire (J. Paterson). There are records possibly of this marriage in Auchendraine near Maybole, Ayrshire.
