    IN SEARCH OF AMOS

    FACTS
    - we know where Amos and Laney are buried and the information off of the stones has been added or confirmed.

    - Probate of John Ketcheson Caverly (1843-1875, son of Amos and Laney)
leaves an organ to daughter Lilly Mary.
    leaves estate to wife Clarrissa.
estate to go to brothers and sisters if all his family is deceased.
if all family members are deceased then everything to children of Clark Moses Caverly (son of Philip Caverly. Why would John name them in his will?)
    - Amos Caverly mentioned in Minutes of the court of quarters sessions of the peace, barred of Dower of John Fraser and Experience Fraser. Amos noted as lot 38, cons 5 Sidney. (Amos would be only 23 and what is he doing on lot 38?). This lot appears to have been owned by the Longwells.

    OTHER INFORMATION FOR THE PUZZLE
    1st Speculation
    - there may have been two lines of the family in North America. The New Hampshire line of Caverly and the Jean Cavilier line (NY).
    - info from Huguenot Historical Society refer to Jean Cavilier with a vague reference to an Amos.

    2nd Speculation
    - another speculation is Amos may have been the son of John Caverly and Prudence Thurston of NY.

    3rd Speculation
    - Amos may be brother of John Caverly rather than a son. (Possibly check Demarest Family Genealogy for info or connection).

    4th Speculation
    - using traditional methods of naming children we find 3rd son named after his father (Amos Miles), 2nd son named after mother's father (George Henry). Eldest son named after father's father (Peter Ketcheson or William Nelson) appears to be the eldest son. Second dau. named after father's mother (Amy) appears to be the 2nd dau., there were only 2 daughters. Therefore, Amos's parents were Peter & Letitia.

    NEW YORK CAVERLY FAMILY
    - moved from Nassau County Long Island to Ulster County Marlborough Twp. (10 miles north of Newburgh)
    - John Caverly 1722-1810 (brother-in-law to Joesph Carpenter) purchased land (Lattington valley).
    - later John was joined by Peter Caverly 1735-? followed 10 years later by Joseph, brother to John.
    - all of these Caverlys were the sons of Peter Caverly (1694-1747) of Oyster Bay Long Island.

Peter Caverly (Oyster Bay Long Island)
-also know as Peter Caverly I and refered to as Peter Cavalier or Cavalie
(Sons of Peter of Oyster Bay)
In 1825 the Presbyterian Church in Oyster Bay burned and most church records were destroyed.

Karen thinks Amos and Phillip Jr. were first cousins. This would mean their fathers were brothers.
There was a Miles in the 3rd Regiment of Ulster while the other Caverly names were in the 3rd.

    - William John Christee and Wife
    - James Martin Foster and Clarisa Caverley trustee of estate of .John K. Caverly (Aug. 5, 1916)
Looks like it was 57 acres.

    Conclusions

Laney wife of Amos died in 1874.
Land must of gone to son John K. Caverly d 1875 but later taken over by Henry Tucker husband of Letitia Caverly. Tuckers owned farm land near that previously owned by Amos.
Land must have then gone to John K Caverlys wife Clarisa (Sharp) Caverly d 1941
Land later went to Lilly Mary Caverly (died 1952) daughter of John and Clarisa. Lilly Mary married J. Martin Foster

Somewhere between 1917 and 1929 land was sold to someone else.

#108b Document signed by James McNabb JP, Allan Taylor JP, Thomas Parker, R. Leavins, Jn D. Hubbard certify Amos Caverly has been a resident of Sidney Township for 18 years.
First Loyalists established on front lots of Hastings County in 1784. Dr. Wm. Canniff's book "Settlement of Upper Canada" mentions a group of 50 settlers arriving in 1789 and they settled north of Belleville. In the list of names was a Cavelry. John Meyers operated bateau in 1794 (also known as Hans Walter-Meyer.) John Meyers had a store and mill in Belleville. One of the mills is the present day tourist welcome centre in Belleville. Alexander Chisholm, also a major land owner sold land to Simon & James McNabb of Scotland, in 1800 and they built a 2nd mill. In 1800 militia was formed and 1801 Masonic Lodge commenced. Therefore, it would be possible there were enough settlers and activity going on for someone to be involved in boat building in Belleville in 1801. The question is was there really a Caverly settling in the area in 1789 and who could it have been since Amos Mills Caverly would only have been about 3 years old at the time.
