MONONA, Iowa - Alvin Gerhard Johnson, 77, formerly of Monona, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at Scenic Acres, rural St. Olaf. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, rural McGregor. Burial in the church cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the American Veterans Post 27 of Monona. Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home, McGregor, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Johnson farmed and drove a truck for many years in Clayton County and also worked at Monona Tavern for three years. He was born on March 24, 1923, in Elgin, son of Julius and Mabel (Amundson) Johnson. He married Geraldine Whittle on Nov. 10, 1948. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. He attended country school. He served in the Army in the Pacific during World War II. He enjoyed reading and gardening. He was a lifetime member of the American Veterans Post 27 of Monona. Surviving are a son, Brad (Valerie) Johnson, of Toms Brook, Va.; a daughter, Charlene Bacon, of Monona; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Schlitter, of Luana. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jim; and a sister, Muriel Hallberg.
