Obituary

Alvah Wells Died at 5:45 this morning at his residence, 736 South Michigan street. He had been in poor health from general debility since last July and during the past week had failed rapidly, being bedfast. Mr. Wells was born in Oswego County, New York, on Oct 3, 1826. His boyhood days were spent in that country where he received his education.

He moved from Oswego County to South Bend, about 24 years ago and had since made this city his home. He was at one time one of the best known contractors in the city. His first large contract after arriving here was the construction of the present First M. E.church. Mr. Wells followed this business for a number of years and then established himself and his son, Elmer Wells, in the sash, blind and door business on the west race under the firm name of Wells & Son. Seven years ago he retired and the business was conducted by the son until the latter disposed of it.

Mr. Wells was a member of the Methodist church and an attendant at Grace church, near his home. In Politics he was a Republican and took an active interest in the affairs of the party. He was a spendid man and his cordial ways made him the center of a large circle of friends. Mr.Wells leaves five children: Mrs. A.R. Wike, Mrs. John Primrose and Elmer Wells reside in this city: Mrs. Mark Foote lives in Evanston, Wyo. and Edward F. Wells is a resident of Peoria, Ill. Mrs. Foote will be unable to attend the funeral owing to the serious illness of her son, Walter Foote, who is suffering with typhoid fever.

The arrangements for the funeral have not been made."
