21 Aug 1885 Wessington Springs Herold - Messrs. Roth Bros. of New Lisbon, WI are in town looking up a business location. They are favorably impressed with the town and will undoubtedly engage in business here in the near future. 28 Aug 1885 - first ad for Roth Bros. store, successors to N.D. Wilder, in the Wessington Springs Herald. Wessington Springs Herald 24 Dec 1886 - Bill. I tell you Joe, Alois Roth is having a busy time now-a-days waiting on customers. Joe. Why, is Theodore away? Bill. Yes Joe. Where is he? Bill. I don't know exactly; he went east you know. Joe. Oh, yes I know. Bill. Well that's all right, but you mustn't tell. 23 Dec 1887 first mention of Alpena store in Wessington Springs Harold ads. Jul 1888 Alois travelled from Wessington Springs to WI to return in 2-3 weeks with his wife and son. 21 Mar 1890 - O.P. Hull rented the store building soon to be vacated by Roth Bros. at Wessington Springs. Hull will move his stock to that place on or about 1 April. 28 Mar 1890 ad for Wessington Springs and Alpena stores. 4 Apr 1890 ad for Alpena and West Superior stores. 9 Jan 1891 last ad in the Wessington Springs Herald for the Alpena and West Superior stores. 12 Sep 1890 - Alois roth moved his household goods to Alpena yesterday and their home will be at that place in the future. 9 jan 1891 Wessington Springs Herold - Alois Roth was over here Tuesday. He will start for Wisconsin and from there he will take a short trip to West Superior. In 1891, AA sold out the Alpena store and brought his family to Superior and lived with the others at 426 Hughitt Ave. His yongest brother Carl had a hemorrhage of the lungs in March 1882 and the Doctor advised a warmer climate so he and his mother moved back to New Lisbon and AA and Anna took charge of the household. On Nov. 2, 1892, AA's daughter Anna Frances was born and AA's wife Anna died two weeks later of typhoid, which was prevalent. Anna was buried at Portage and AA moved there in April, 1893 and his mother came to keep house for him bringing Carl (AA's young brother) and Huttie (AA's son) who lived with his grandmother after the death of his mother. The baby Anna Frances was raised by her maternal grandmother Butter in Mayville WI. AA started a store in Portage and ran it until shortly after he married Clara Hettinger 23 Oct 1895. Then he sold out and moved back to Superior. In the mean time, TJ married Emma Bierbauer 12 Jan 1893 and they were living at 426 Hughitt. Carl died in Sep 1893. AA and family lived with TJ and Emma for two months in 1896 and then moved to 6th and Cummings.
